Strategic issues
"I found the work of De Nederlandsche Bank interesting even during my studies, both the monetary side and supervision. As a trainee, I work on policies and laws and regulations for pensions and insurance. For example, how do you ensure that insurers remain financially sound, even in the long term? Or how do we, as the supervisory authority, stand on the political wrangling in the area of pensions? Strategic issues on a broad playing field - exactly what I like. Solving complex problems energises me. And the great thing is: the work can be as challenging as you want here. As a trainee, you get a lot of support to help you learn quickly, and before you know it you have considerable responsibility. Eager learners will feel right at home here.
Diverse group of trainees
I have always had a clear idea of what I wanted and I have always worked hard to achieve it. I am now seeing the real-world application of all the theory I learned during my studies. The policy work is more practical and is often aligned with strategy, communication and relationships, but at the same time there’s a close substantive match with what you learned at university. That makes the traineeship a lot of fun for me. And it's great to experience it with your fellow trainees. Our academic backgrounds are somewhat similar, but otherwise we're all very different people, with different characters, different hobbies. That kind of diversity works well. DNB explicitly encourages you to get the most out of your talents. They create an atmosphere here where wonderful things can happen.
Solving complex problems gives me energy. And the work can be as challenging as you want here.
Everything has been thought of
Until November, we were still in the temporary office building. December was a work-from-home month and a few of us trainees took the liberty of working from Malaga for a few weeks while the finishing touches were being placed on the new building. At first, it was hard to imagine that this would be our workplace. In my opinion there is so much here, everything is so well organised. We have fantastic workstations with curved screens and adjustable desks. The building is spacious and bright, with lots of greenery. And there are plenty of places to get away from your desk: coffee corners, the restaurant, courtyard gardens, a gym and a rooftop terrace and bar on the 16th floor.
Great day
I still live near Arnhem, near the German border, so my commute to the office is quite long. Still, I always look forward to starting my day. Whether it is because I can brainstorm new solutions, make progress on a difficult file, or simply because the atmosphere in the department is so pleasant. Yesterday I worked from home and got a lot done, which was also nice. But today I'm back at the office for a day full of meetings, and I’m looking forward to a great day. I really enjoy my work."
