Personal growth
Working at DNB appealed to me from the beginning. De Nederlandsche Bank ensures that the financial system operates properly and thus has an important social function. And supervision is an important factor for ensuring financial stability. It means a lot to me to be part of that. I came into contact with DNB early in my studies. What struck me was the genuine interest in my aspirations. I was asked from the start where I wanted to go in a professional capacity. That kind of focus on personal growth - and on diversity, incidentally - is very characteristic of this organisation.
Direct impact
As a trainee at On-Site Supervision & Banking Expertise, I am currently experiencing real fieldwork: on-site inspections at a bank. We pay an in-person visit to the bank as a team of five, to see for ourselves whether the bank has everything in order with regard to risk. I look specifically at capital requirements: Is the bank holding enough capital in view of the risks it faces? It’s really enjoyable to be so hands-on with a specific bank. Banks have a core function in our society, and on-site supervision has an immediate impact.
As a trainee, you have the space to discover what you want from your work, and what gives you satisfaction.
Voyage of discovery
I have a broad background because of my Master’s in Finance, and I really enjoy the quantitative side of things. In my next placement, I hope to gain more exposure to macroeconomics. How do financial markets work? As a trainee, you have plenty of room to discover what you want from your work and what gives you satisfaction. You’re challenged to look at things and think about them comprehensively. In addition to basic supervision training, I have also taken a course on quantum computing, a topic that is unrelated to my current placement, but my manager encouraged me to sign up. The message from DNB is consistently: do what challenges you, what you want to grow in.
Dream job
Everyone here has a broad perspective, looks beyond their own department and is socially engaged. DNB is made up of all kinds of people, and everyone brings their own skills, knowledge and personality to the mix. It is precisely this kind of diversity that makes everyone feel empowered and able to do their part. Being open minded and ambitious certainly comes in handy during the traineeship, and of course being eager to figure things out for yourself and shifting to a higher gear when necessary. If you have the drive, then this really is a dream job.
