DNB trainee

Sustainability transition

In September, I started as a trainee in the Financial Markets Division, in the Market Intelligence section. Our department gathers information from the financial markets and turns it into daily updates for other experts at DNB. I help colleagues with analysis and also do data analysis myself, with a focus on sustainability developments in financial markets and among market participants. The big question, of course, is: how are financial markets preparing for the various sustainability transitions, and can we make our financial system resilient to climate- and nature-related risks?

Realistically progressive

In terms of sustainability and biodiversity, we are doing poorly globally. That sometimes really gets me down. But I also fully understand that we are part of a system with objectives that do not necessarily include working on a healthy living environment. And as much as I would like things to be different, money plays a major role in our system. You can be a progressive thinker at DNB, but it is also an organisation where you have to be realistic about where we are as a system and the things you can do within the confines of the system. People exhibit certain behaviours, so you have to look at what we can do to ensure that things get better rather than worse.

I want to make the financial sector sustainable from the inside, and DNB is the place to do just that.

Future-proof model

With my Master’s in Global Business & Sustainability, I could also have joined an NGO. And funny enough, during my studies I never thought: when I finish I want to work for DNB. But I think you can make a real difference here and make the financial sector sustainable from the inside out, rather by treating symptoms on the periphery. Sustainability is a focus in many arenas, but I want to tackle it at the level of the entire financial sector. I want to help create a more future-proof model. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. DNB is the place for me!

Specialist with a broad perspective

If you focus only on a sub-theme in the sustainability domain, you will miss the big picture. It is such a complex issue... I am now starting to understand things from the financial markets perspective, but after this I would like to look at how risks are mitigated from a supervision perspective My goal is to be able to see the big picture and understand sustainability from all angles. If I am able to take a three-pronged approach to sustainability during my traineeship, I’ll develop a real specialism, but also a broad perspective. And that is very valuable not only for myself, but also for DNB, in my opinion.
